  • I cannot believe that the median for that curve for blacks in Africa is between 60 and 70 (indicating serious retardation). Therefore the man advocating this position is either ignorant or evil.

Bolding mine. So, someone advocating something that doesn't fit your beliefs is either ignorant or evil. Interesting. Or to be honest, completely uninteresting.

    • You'll see that a nation can cope with one or two of these factors and still do well. If they have all or most of them, it's a different story.

I will not argue those short examples of mine to great depth. Economic literature has examined them and found that they aren't good enough explanations for underdevelopment. Environmental factors aren't held central any more, the focus is on institutions and population. The politically correct invoke culture (a property of populations) as the explanation (echoing Max Weber), while the politically incorrect invoke IQ (another property of populations). With regards to institutions I'd say that that research, whicle interesting, doesn't hold much explanatory power. Crappy institutions stiffle growth, sure, but why do instutions become crappy? It does come back down to people.

There is nothing hateful about such research. It is therefore quite amazing why people such as you react so strongly to it, even resorting to insulting people based on media snippets of their work.

The idea that all men are completely equal in all abilities and that the same holds for groups is so completely unnatural that I can't but sincerely admire the propaganda machine that has managed to make so many people internalize it.

You're assuming that your position should be the default. I expect you'll justify this by pointing out how much nicer it sounds.

You can restrict yourself to not commenting on anyone before you've read their life's work, if you wish.
I'll restrict myself to not insulting someone who takes a certain position on a highly complicated and controversial issue when all I have to go on is a few simple sentences.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem? He can't believe it because the implications of Africans having a median IQ of 70 are completely inconsistent with reality.

What do you think a sub-saharan Africa with a median IQ of 60-70 should look like?

                • So in the Georgian era the rich got richer, the poor poorer.

Looking back on it even now one finds the 'case histories' contained in Eden's 'The State of the Poor' agonizing reading. How could we have permitted such things to happen ?

How could we have allowed such poverty, such riches, to exist side by side ?

There is Mary Wootton, apprenticed by the parish to a Mrs. John Easton. It must have been an unhappy doemstic service apprenticeship and worse than the workhouse, for one day Mary ran away, taking with her 27 of Mrs. Easton's golden guineas.

Mary was caught and sentenced to death. She was just nine years old.

It is true Mary's tragedy happened in 1735, but even as late as 1801 Andrew Brenning was publicly hanged for breaking into a house and stealing a spoon.

                  Andrew was all of thirteen.

And in 1808 a girl of seven was hanged at Lynne.

                  Onwards to the Regency:

In 1800 there had been more than 160 crimes for which the death penalty might be inflicted. At its worst, this code permitted the execution of children and prescribe hanging for trivial thefts.

                  'Innate' criminality :

The social environment is the cultivation medium of criminality. The criminal is the microbe, an element which only becomes important when it finds the medium which causes it to foment. Every society has the criminals which it deserves.

Everyone dies because most of them aren't even capable of subsistence farming.
