    Steam can also be used for AC by use of absorption chillers to produce chilled water, rather than using electric chillers. In terms of energy and cost efficiency in someplace like Manhattan, central steam systems are far better than separate gas heating and electric AC.

                    Some of Con-Eds power generating facilities may still use steam generators. One possible use of the spent steam would be to use it to heat nearby buildings. If this steam was under enough pressure to produce a 77 foot tall geyser though this incident probably didn't involve spent steam.

                            As was already noted, the steam heating system in Manhattan is over a century old. The pipe that exploded was from 1924.

                            If you ever walk in Manhattan, eventually you will notice steam coming out from some manhole. As as our resident power supply guy alreayd stated, steam can be very efficient.
