I wasn't the one to bring it up in this thread.

And really, I bring up the fact that he's a lawyer more often when I'm citing his opinion (usually in US law threads) than anything else).

And drinking bottled water at home because they dislike tapwater is in no way conspicuous consumption. They aren't flaunting anything. They like one over the other for their own personal utility reasons.
No, Kuci is totally correct, here. Most bottled water IS tap water. That why I think if you live in a place with a half-ways decent tap water and you buy bottled water to drink on a daily basis you are a moron. Bottled watter is pathetic, wasteful, and decadent.

        • And people who call people morons are morons.... because it will get them restricted.

You are welcome to your opinons, but calling people who disagree with you morons is not the way to go.

I bet someone could find a watch that looks just as nice as yours but only costs, say, $120.

No, it isn't a deal to people in Africa because it isn't their money. Just because person X has lots of money, doesn't mean anyone else is entitled to it, just cause he's poor.

Every dollar you own, is more than the usual african person has. Why not send him a dollar today?

Eventually the African people will sell some diamonds which will end up on some rich dude's watch.

QFT. And if teh rich dude's watch is way overpriced (say, he spends $900 when he could have bought a similar one for $120), then he adds $780 to teh economy

                    • It's the smashing-windows-stimulates--economic-activity fallacy. You're assuming that the money wouldn't otherwise be spend or saved (=invested) and that simply isn't true in 99.9% of the cases. Even if in those case in which the money would otherwise be retracted from circulation, the value of the remaining money stock would increase (=decrease in inflation). Buying "overpiced" goods, as opposed to buying "properly priced" goods or to saving, does nothing to help the economy.

                              • I'm going to say I don't agree with JM completely. I have no problem with people spending all of their money on luxuries. I just have a low opinion of those who spend their money on things just to prove to other people that they had that money.
