And of course, your defense didn't work out that well, either. My point was not that you have a lot of money, but you spend it on fairly frivolous (IMO) things.

I like Chai Tea lattes from starbucks; however, this place kicks the **** out of starbucks in both taste and ambiance.

I'm sorry I thought this was the apolyton coffee shop thread.

          I want a latte.

I've got three coffee shops near my apartment, Moxie Java, Atomic Coffee, and a family-owned place called Selah's. All three are better then the crap at the Starbucks in my university's student union.

I do have a penchant for a cup of Earl Grey now and again though

So... Are you bean people or pre grind people? I won't even bother to ask if you're instant people, don't have a flame proof suit on. I usually buy grinded coffee that's prepared with a filter.

Yeah I know i'm a heathen that's missing out and bla bla bla.

Bleck, french press coffee tastes like dirt (even when it's made precisely correctly). Make it with the french press, then make it with a Melitta, and taste them both side by side... the french press is much dirtier, and the Melitta is much more flavorful and less bitter.

Starbucks over-roasts their coffee beans, so they have a distinctive taste that people can get used to (and thus only drink Starbucks); similar to the McDonald's french fry addiction due to the ... additives ... in their oil.

Good coffee houses (even major chains) have properly roasted beans, so they are not bitter and much smoother. Starbucks employees also universally can't make good cappuccinos...

When I worked at Seattle's Best (owned by Starbucks, but with their own, actually good coffee) about half the people I trained were from Starbucks, and I had to hit them in the head with a mallet a few times to get them to stop moving the pitcher up and down while frothing the milk... they made this airy crap that tasted like burnt milk and had no body to it. Blech.

Anyhow, it's definitely worth it to go to a coffee house if you like good coffee, if for no other reason then that they make it fresh and in a proper container (airpot or a proper brewer) rather than in a glass carafe. Coffee left on a warmer open to the air will be stale in twenty or thirty minutes, and if it's made with preground beans was stale before it was brewed...

I do have to say though that it's quite amusing to correlate the people who will or won't pay for a good cup of coffee to the people who will or won't pay for a good pint of beer... those of you drinking preground, burnt, non-arabica coffee might as well go out and get a six pack of Budweiser

(and I don't mean the Czech beer )

I definately won't pay for either a good cup of coffee or a good pint of beer

I'm sure you know more about coffee than me, but it's supposed to be bitter isn't it?

First the kind of rounder taste then the bitter after taste, I will agree about the arabica vs robusta (correct name?) beans. Even I can tell the difference there and it's clear which is better. But considering my "addiction" to coffee as a stimulant I would drink even instant coffee if that was all there was, maybe not in as large amounts though.
