I've been around for just about as long as AAHZ, and I honestly can't think of a time when a noob was driven away. I really don't think this is the issue. I suspect the bigger issue may be that there's less overlap between on-topic participants and the OTF than in the past; recruiting out of those forums is a good idea"I have as much authority as the pope.
