Interesting how tariffs are always a good idea when they're applied to someone else's exports, as opposed to one's own.

When your products by and large aren't killing people, I'd say it is OK.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

By and large, they aren't killing people, compared with, say, Altria's products.

Let's not even get started on GD, Boeing and Raytheon.

What would you call tainted catfish, counterfit medicine, lead lined toys, toothpate made with anti-freeze, tires that killed people, etc.?

I'm not saying that these products don't kill people. I am saying that other countries export products that kill people as well. So, why the sudden focus on China... are you quite certain this has nothing to do with the rather imposing trade deficit the US has with China?

Anyway - worried about dangerous Chinese products? Don't buy Chinese products, or products from companies that import from China.

The fact all those stories happened within quick succession of each other.

The government has an obligation to ensure consumer products sold in stores are reasonably safe. Maybe in lawless libertarian Canada that's not true

Yes, that raised my suspicions, too.

Six Thousand Year Old Man: Are you saying that the US government tainted those products and others in order to scare people about Chinese produts? If so, how do you explain this wierd article? How something can be both tainted and safe I dunno but that is what he said.

China is still committing and getting away with various atrocities on a regular basis. Why is a little tainted food gonig to change anything?

BTW china is using currency manipulation to achieve the US\China trade deficit. Its hardly mercantilistic to implement tarrifs to counter illegal trade practices

I'm willing to credit the US government with the ability to be a little more subtle than that. Not a LOT more subtle, mind you.

But I'm sure you're familiar with the tactics involved.

You mean as opposed the every other country in the world that refrains from trying to influence the value of their currency when they can do so? Not to speak of the US diplomatic efforts that go into maintaining the dollar's position as world currency (including punishing countries that try to trade oil in euros). Don't be so jingoistic, please.

It's also curious how the US admin talk about currency tactics intensified and changed character once China began switching a considerable part of their currency reserves from dollars to euros (I believe they aim at 30% and think they are already past 20%).

(On a different note: is it just me or is access to Apolyton very unreliable/unstable since the last week or so...?)

China executed some poor guy over the whole deal. Apparently he was taking bribes to look the other way. He confessed and gave back the money, but they said that wasn't enough to show him mercy. Think on this the next time you want to complain about the justice system in the U.S. or you think someone is just a scapegoat for a crooked politician. We're not perfect, but at least we're not China.
