  • China, trade, and consumer safety

Since it seems like every other Tuesday there's another story about poisonous or otherwise dangerous products being imported from China, would it be in US interests to start errecting barriers (quotas, tariffs, etc.) to limit the amount of havoc such products can wreak on the safety of US consumers at least until the Chinese clean house? Would such a regime be within WTO rules?

I'm guessing "Wrong Forum"? Or is this DinoDoc's try at posting in an "on topic" forum?

EDIT: I just got back from reading the OTF...now I understand.

I was wondering if Civ3 bts is made in china, and that was how this thread applied.

I wouldn't want my bts disc exploiding and causing me serious injury.

This most certainly isn't the wrong forum to post about this very important issue. Why shouldn't I be able to post about this in the Civ 4 forum?

As for your suggestion, it seems to be unrealistic. More reasonable responses would be more useful in spuring discussion.

Tariffs and quotos are always bad and the more you put up, the easier it is to put more up. They should just have better regulation on our side, and fortunately the market will force china to regulate its own **** better (of course its unfortunate it has to be market forces and not an inherent sense of doing no harm and taking pride in what you make, but at least it can helpe people's sometime).

I'd say the US should bribe Russia, India, the Ottomans and the Mongolions to invade China (again). We might suffer a -4 from that but we could change our civics to theirs to even that out.
May it come that all the Radiances will be known as ones own radiances

Except that doesn't seem to be happening and people are dieing as a result in some cases and in others it still puts lives at risk. Do you think the market will forces changes fast enough unless it is forced to?

in the end, you have to have faith in the market. This doesn't work if americans are lazy.

People need to boycott these products, and even if they are made in china, they are being sold in american stores. Imagine what a boycott of walmart would do until they stop buying chinese products?

I'm not saying this is necessary, so far there have only been a few isolated incidents.
