    Exciting times.

We had Taipei 101 breaking the 500m limit in 2003 and that seemed like a lot. It seemed like the race will continue slowly. Taipei 101 is a mere 60m taller than the Empire State Building, which was finished in 1931.

But then Dubai felt that it must have the biggest dick.

Burj Dubai, already more that half built and scheduled for completion in 2009 will be at least 700m talls, most likely at 807m (60% taller than Taipei 101) and maybe even reach ~950m.

(Burj Dubai, Petronas Towers, Taipei 101, Sears Tower)

Even crazier. Dubai is probably going to build a second building. Al Burj. The current rumors talk about 1200m. 50% higher than Burj Dubai, and almost three times higher than the WTC towers.

Will the USA, or the rich East Asian cities take up the challenge? Will we see a race between kilometer high towers in the next decade? Discuss.

I'd be too scared to go up in it... I'd probably pee my pants in the elevator. Not for fear, but just because it would probably take too long.

It's all just a cover for the space elevator project...

Burj Dubai will have an elevator rising at 18m/s. Less than a minute, and you're at the top.

I doubt the US will stay in the game for the tallest (we're basically out of the race now). We'll still build supertalls, especially in places like Chicago, just not the tallest.

What about the Chicago Spire and the Freedom Tower? Can't they be scaled up, now that 500m is no longer relevant?

Is there a negative correlation between median penis size and how tall are skyscraper?

                Look:

African: No Skyscraper = Big Penis size

American: Medium Skyscraper = Medium penis size

Asia: Big Skyscraper = Small Penis size

We can see a strong correlation. I think it explains a LOT of thing!

Good job Asia! 1km skyscrapers are simply mind blowing.

Wikipedia has it as "construction imminent" and groundbreaking occuring this month. Given these facts, I doubt they are scaling it up past 600 meters, well less already than Burj Dubai.

To be fair, I have not done any research on this besides Wiki, so I might be talking out of my ass.

I couldn't help but think of the implications of cronos_qc's post when I looked at this website of The Chicago Spire
