Gian Gastone de'Medici. Alcoholic old pederast, dies at the age of 65, having seen the once-glittering city of Florence become a bankrupt backwater. This was the end of the great Medici family.

            The Battle of Corrick's Ford

Significant because even though it is often overlooked in Civil War history (thanks to Bull Run on 7/21), this Yankee victory kept east-west railroad lines safe and started the ball rolling for West Virgina to become it's own state.

Also notable is that this battle greatly inflated McClellan's achievements and made him a hero. Consequently, two weeks later McClellan was made commander of the Army of the Potomac. This is arguably one of the worst moves Lincoln made during the entire war.

One could argue that putting Burnside in charge of anything was a bigger mistake...

Oh, but he was such a fashionable man! How his sideburns tug at my heartstrings and make me swoon!

And while I agree that he was a horrible failure and horrendous leader, at least Burnside didn't think he was God's gift to the Union like McClellan.

Yes, Burnsie at least had some humility. Didn't attempt to refuse the command of the AotP, saying he was best suited for brigade command? Or was that somebody else?

Yeah, that was Burnside. He said he lacked the capabilites to take command of the entire army when it was offered. Later, command was practically pushed upon him and he only took it so that he would be obeying orders. After Fredericksburg he asked twice to be removed before Lincoln finally agreed. Sadly the Union couldn't find a decent replacement and he was replaced with Hooker who wasn't much better.

See, I'd say that was a bigger mistake by Lincoln than McClellan's appointment. Mac had his faults, but he was a reasonably competant (if uninspired) general. Burnside did lack the capabilities to command an army, and TOLD Lincoln precisely that. Abe ignored him, and got a frontal assault on a well-fortified position for his trouble.

                                July 21st!

This days saw the death of Henry "Hotspur" Percy in pitched battle at Shrewsbury 1403, as his unsuccessful attempt to seize the English crown was defeated by King Henry IV.

Additionally, the Confederates slapped the Union in 1861, in the Battle of the Bull Run, while 1798 saw Napoleon defeat the Egyptians in the Battle of the Pyramids.

It's a blood, guts and slaughter day today.
