  • This day in history

    26th June.

Francisco Pizarro, former pig farmer and conquistador extraordinaire, conqueror of the Incas and deeply beloved by generations of schoolboys trying to sneak the word "piss" into lessons, probably isn't a fan of this date. On this day in 1544, the conqueror of Peru saw his Lima palace stormed by former followers (including Diego de Almagro), who promptly hacked him to pieces.

On a brighter note, in 1918 the world's greatest penis substitute was unveiled by Germany. "Big Bertha" was their 420mm uber-howitzer, which promptly made life a lot more interesting for the Parisians it was aimed at.

      June 27th

AD 363. In Rome, the Emperor Julian hands victory to the Christians by being inconsiderate enough to snuff it. He had seen a pagan revival in his reign, but once he was gone, it was God-bothering all the way.

Meanwhile, in 1905 Russia a load of maggotty food proves to be somewhat momentous. It was served to the crew of the Russian battleshup "Potemkin", and their subsequent mutiny was a prime inspiration for the Russian revolution and rise of communism. If only they'd just refused to leave a tip instead....

A victory so complete, that even an atheist, honoring a pagan emperor, puts the date as "the year of our Lord"

I'm not an atheist. Then again, I'm not a Christian either.

Even so, using "CE", as promoted by some, still strikes me as a bit daft. It's just a label, after all.

Id use AD for say, church history.

Using it to refer to events involving primarily or even exclusively Muslims, pagans, and Jews, seems silly to me.

Meh, I use AD too, and I am an atheist. It is, indeed, merely a label.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

It does seem quite strange that they can't use BC and AD when they are still using the same date as the end of BCE and the beginning of CE.

It would be too confusing to use a different date. CE refers to "Common era" (IE what we all use, even though we arent Christians). AD means Anno Domini, Year of our Lord. Leaving aside the question of whether or not Jesus is MY lord, he certainly wasnt considered lord by Mohammed, or Bar Kochba, or Julian the Apostate.

The only reason to keep AD is cause youre used to it. Once you get used to CE, it feels just as natural as AD used to.

Use whatever label you want. I was merely pointing out the particular irony (am I using that word right?) of Laz using AD in describing the triumph of Christianity over Julian.

I will continue to use CE, as that is my preference, and I figure the more folks see it, the less odd it will seem.

                      27th June 1472-

In the French city of Beauvais, Jeanne Laisne (a young butcher's daughter) goes utterly mental with her father's cleaver and takes on the invading Burgundian forces. She hacks their standard bearer into wobbly chunks, and becomes a national hero.

28th June - St Vitus Day

1389 - Battle of Kosovo Polje.

"Bolje grob nego rob!" ("Better grave than slave!")

                        From Jerusalem, the holy city,
Flying came a swift grey bird, a falcon,
And he carried in his beak a swallow.

But behold and see! 'Tis not a falcon,
'Tis the holy man of God, Elias,
And he does not bear with him a swallow,
But a letter from God's Holy Mother.
Lo, he bears the letter to Kosovo,
Drops it on the Tsar's knees from the heavens,

And thus speaks the letter to the monarch:
"Tsar Lazar, thou Prince of noble lineage,
What wilt thou now choose to be thy kingdom?
Say, dost thou desire a heav'nly kingdom,
Or dost thou prefer an earthly kingdom?
If thou should'st now choose an earthly kingdom,
Knights may girdle swords and saddle horses,
Tighten saddle-girths and ride to battle--
You will charge the Turks and crush their army!
But if thou prefer a heav'nly kingdom,
Build thyself a church upon Kosovo,
Let not the foundations be of marble,
Let them be of samite and of scarlet....
And to all thy warriors and their leaders
Thou shalt give the sacraments and orders,
For thine army shall most surely perish,
And thou too, shalt perish with thine army."

When the Tsar had read the holy letter,
Ponder'd he, and ponder'd in this manner:
"Mighty God, what now shall this my choice be!
Shall I choose to have a heav'nly kingdom?
Shall I choose to have an earthly kingdom?
If I now should choose an earthly kingdom,
Lo, an earthly kingdom is but fleeting,
But God's kingdom shall endure for ever."

1855- Rejoice, socialists! Trade unions were legalised in Britain, ensuring that we'd not see any more Tolpuddle Martyrs. This also paved the way for the arrival of the Labour Party.

1908- A massive explosion, equivalent to 1000 Hiroshima nukes, takes place four miles up in the atmosphere over the Tunguska river in Siberia. It flattens trees in a 20 mile radius and knocks people to the ground 60 miles away in Vanara. It was believed to have been caused by an asteroid or meteorite.

1934- In "The night of long knives" Hitler purges his own party.

Today is officially designated "Blood, guts and slaughter" day.

1898- Cuba. Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders storm San Juan Hill. This was the most celebrated action in the US/Spanish war which ushered in the era of theUSA as a major global power.

1916- The Somme. The bleakest moment in British military history as the Somme offensive begins. 60,000 British troops were killed, wounded or captured in one day.

1863- The Battle of Gettysburg begins.
