CD's are in wav format. When you rip them, you can compress them into MP3 format.
LAME is what does the compressing. It's not the ripping program itself, it's the compression program within the ripping utility, dbpoweramp or Exact Audio Copy for instance. Both use LAME.

I've changed mine twice, but it's not difficult to figure out who I was before as the first 3 letters are the same.
