  • you're clueless.
Do you require someone to worship you to validate your existance today?

I respect medicine more, why is that such a theat to you? Does that equate to talking **** about math/physics for some reason?

      • Clearly, given the internets incredible value to medical research, the public encryption key technology has vastly advanced the cause of medicine. Also clearly, the basis for these advances was a mathamatician providing an application of the most basic science...math.

Please also ask your doctor if he would like working without MRIs, CAT scans, radiation thearpy, or a host of medical applications that have been developed through applied mathmatics

Yeah, but how many electrical, mechanical and computer science engineets not to mention the doctors themselves are between them and the patient. No component is more import than the other.

I have no axe to grind here, I am not a member of any of these communities. I do find it funny how you guys pounce on everyone who dares to sacrifice to any god other than yours though.

I agree that all the sciences are important. Without application, then mathamatics is pretty useless. It is just that mathamatics forms the basis for all these other sciences that you mention. That is why I believe it is the science that deserves the most respect.

Didn't mean to sound as if I was jumping on you. Sorry.

Do you understand that computer scientists are applied mathematicians? He is both, because he's a mathematician and also applied it.

Computer scientists are mathematicians, dufus. And his breakthrough was both theoretical and applied mathematics.

Well then perhaps the poll should not have split them up then eh?

Obviously almost all feilds spill over into each other, but this achievement is clearly on the computer science side.

actually...it is probably the only field you could learn without language.

Computer science, especially theoretical computer science, is merely a subset of mathematics. There's no "spillover." It just happens to be such a huge subfield within mathematics that it merits specialization.

                              • You can say that about all sorts of fields. But we make a conscious effort to split them up.

If I hire a mathematician and computer scientist should I expect vastly different skill sets? Do mathematicians in general know programing language? I don't know, I am asking. I suspect not.
