  • This has me stumped for now.

I thought of Grant Wood initially, but Iowa is a bit short on mountains, isn't it ?

Then I thought Thomas Hart Benton, then eventually Georgia O'Keeffe.

The astronomical clue is no help, by the way.

It might refer to black slavery in the US and the Underground Railroad in particular.

          • Please post the answer after two days, if no one was able to find it.

As of now anyone can post a new painting (Spencer can tell us what it was, when he returns).

            • To tide us over until Spencer puts us out of our misery.

              Not Spanish.

If you were singing about the artist, would they be described as 'boney' ?

                  Ker-ching! Well done old bean.

One of my favourite paintings in the National Gallery. I like Moroni's work a lot...

Moroni is the kind of obscure genius it's a delight to discover. He was born in the early 1520s in Albino, a small town near the city of Bergamo, close to the Italian Alps; he worked all his life in the area. Italy in the Renaissance was divided into a patchwork of city-states, and just because you stayed in your own city didn't mean you were limited. Moroni's portraits are stupendous evidence of how Renaissance ideas spread far beyond Florence. A young man poses above an inscription from Virgil's Aeneid, in Latin; cavaliers stand in front of ruined columns and marble walls, sweetly melancholic memories of ancient Rome. The elite of Bergamo were privileged to have a local genius who, instead of heading off for Venice where he would have had to compete with Titian, portrayed them.
It looks like a simple portrait of a tailor, but look again: Moroni's work is one of the best paintings in the National Gallery, says Jonathan Jones.

I think his work resembles a cross between Titian, Holbein and Velasquez's paintings.

                  • OK, this one is one of the most enigmatic paintings i have ever seen. It is really famous and the thematic is very obvious so i think no clues are needed for now...

It's the porcelain textured skin, and the mask-like face that get me every time. Weird...
