Norwich Cathedral is nearly 1000 years old. In those days, they built to last and to survive. Its surrounded by high stone walls and contains within its walls gardens that can be converted to farms. There is escape access to the river via strong, lockable metal gates. The Cathedral itself is solid stone and large enough to house several dozen people plus supplies. Or big enough for me and my favourites. The surrounding area can be relatively easily cleaned of infestation once the outer perimeter is secured.

Barring that, there are several other stone churches with high walls, another cathedral and a castle to possibly take refuge in. The access to long term food stores over the winter points in favour of an urban defensive strategy.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

No mention of hunkering down in the Winchester?

The test and the thread are lame.

28 Days Later type zombies would definitely suck.
They were fast, but dumb. All you need is a barrier strong enough to withstand fists and your good. Any store with security doors and pull down gates would work nicely.

Small islands, OTOH, would be an excellent place to hide out, particularly if they have farms and wells.
Zombies can walk underwater. Would need one protected by strong currents.

I forget which movie (Dawn of the Dead?) but the escape-to-an-island trick failed miserably. The survivors all died shortly after they got there. Always assume others have gone before you with the same idea and had infected among them.
Yeah thats the one I'd talking about. They had a city on a river island with the bridges barricaded, but the zombies just walked through the river.

I'd get a ship, pack it up with whatever I can get, go to the middle of the Atlantic and then run on just generators, drifting. Would stay out there indefinetly if you bring fishing gear. Zombies can't last more than, what, two months before being to decomposed to worry about?

Unless we are talking about the skeleton type, but those are evil zombies and a totally different ballgame. I assumed we were talking about the governmet/corporation experiment gone awry type.

Skeletal zombies are probably as likely as any other type I mean think about it...

Yes but their demeanor is totally different. Skeletal zombies probably have glowing red eyes and genuine evil hatred. They might be motivated to find a way around or over your wall. And they are harder to kill, you have to get to the source of the evil, or something similar. You can't just fortify yourself and wait them out.

Regular zombies just mope around all slow like. They are usually lazy, never problem solving or working together. No pride in the job

So they're the Frenchmen of the zombie world?

I'd believe skeletal zombies are easier to handle for they lack the tissue to keep their bones together. While you'd need fairly powerful devices to neutralize regular zombies, a mere bat may suffice to detach the bones of skeletal zombies.

I again refer to the skyscraper as a defensive option, for even agile zombies cannot climber smooth walls.

Don't forget that for every idea you come up with there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people with the same exact idea. Your little utopia of a few dozen people may realistically turn out to be a sardine can of humanity.

I have a 52% survival chance. I think I need to lose some weight and get a baseball bat. Can't have a gun, unfortunately. Our politicians clearly manage the country poorly, if they leave it vulnerable to zombie invasions.

A wrist rocket with ball bearings will do you just fine.

Zombie heads are as soft as melons. At least the last invasion was that way.

I recall back in the late 1990's there was Muslim-Christian violence in Indonesia where the Muslims were lynching Christians saying they had sold out to the west. In any event the government had outlawed individual Indonesians owning guns so people were buying huge amounts of baseball bats. We're talking Louisville Slugger had to send extra shipments to Indonesia despite the fact that no one in Indonesia actually played baseball.
