As some have already pointed out; while spanking might have an effect in the short run, it doesn't in itself teach the kid why something is wrong and it might create a growing emotional distance between you and your child that you can never regain later on in life.

You can't really teach a 2 year old "why" something is wrong, only that it is wrong. IMO. I don't think a 2 yo has the ability to reason yet.Comment

That's my take. We communicate on it, and while she is not against me spanking she won't do it, and that makes me the bad guy. So, I use it as a last ditch, and it works.The fact that both parents aren't united in that approach would seem to be the biggest mark against it though.Comment

I'm in almost the same situation Japher. My girl is younger (not 2 till September) and neither of us will hit. However, my wife is a big pushover and it is a situation where I'm the bad guy. "Wait till your father gets home!" Will be a big part of my wifes disciplining. (Actually, it's wait till your father wakes up!!).

Hopefully she will assosiate not doing what she is told/having a tantrum with these boring time outs. Then she will modify her behavior.
I'd personally go with the smack on the ass but this is an alternative method for the limp wristed parents out there.
