I've heard that it is better for the child psychologically if you state that the action is bad instead of calling the child bad. I got that from a Soc. prof though, not Psych.

That's true. The action is bad.

There are some books out there on sleep and bedtime issues. Getting your kids on a regular schedule does wonders. An overly tired kid is cranky and wound up -- too wound up to sleep.

A great rule of thumb: never wake a sleeping baby.

As for corporal punishment -- it's pretty damned hard to fight the instinct. But you should IMHO. If your authority is based on being bigger and more physical, a lot of resentment can build up. Your daughter's perception of men will be largely based on her daddy. Violence should not, IMHO, be part of it. It can also affect your relationship with your wife. something to think about. But obviously, it's your call.

                      Good advice from bipolarbear btw.

bipolarbear, also, that would be more of an accurate accusation, so you know.... let's keep the name calling with our pets, not kids. 'BAD DOG! BAD DOG!'

You don't want to indoctrinate kids into not doing things because they are afraid of the consequences, and at younger age more like 'if I do this, I will get punished so I won't'. That's not practical and still the same result, that's indoctrination you don't want to be doing, unless you want them to be stupid forever. You want to work them to realize that it is the action that is unacceptable, why it is so and so forth. So like... to provoke a thought of not doing it because they'd get caught, but not doing it because they don't want to do that unacceptable thing because they know why it is unacceptable.

I would echo the rabbits comments, except to add that every child is different. Two of mine sleep really well, the last is proving more challenging. We had a week and a half of pure hell getting him into a good sleep pattern. However, in the end we prevailled and the little man is sleeping a good six to eight hours a stretch at night (instead of 1-3 hours)
