Uhm, I sort of feel obliged to make a thread about this weekend's polls.
Sadly, its most notable claim to history is its overarching yawn factor. Things started out well though, with loose cannon and populist Dedecker getting kicked out of the Flemish liberal party and subsequently wreaking havoc in the Flemish christian-democrat party, the Flemish nationalist party and the Flemish far-right party. A surprise "defeat" of the far-right Vlaams Belang in Antwerp in the municipal polls several months ago triggered an internal power struggle. This eventually resulted in the sidelining of strongman Dewinter and the defection of a number of moderates to the party of aforementioned loose cannon. Maybe more significantly, a major corruption scandal in Charleroi threatened the Walloon socialists with total implosion.
In the end, the loose cannon's party doesn't seem to be getting anywhere and the Walloon socialist looks to maintain its #1 position in Walloon politics.
The only events of interest so far is the mud-slinging between the Walloon socialist party and the Walloon liberal party. A headscarves ban by the mayor of Antwerp may be causing the loss of votes of muslim votes to the green party. Other than that the campaigns have been lacking a noteworthy central theme. A socialist-christian democrat coalition seems all but certain.
The most significant question is how many sacrifices the Walloons are willing to make to install Di Rupo (strongman of the Walloon socialists) as prime minister or how many sacrifices the Flemish are willing to make to install Leterme (strongman of the Flemish christian-democrats) as prime minister.
As a sidenote: I was made to volunteer to do my civil duty at the polling station of my neighbourhood. Please donate advice to rig the vote.
