The paperwork may or may not support it, but what do you think happens when you deposit it in the bank? Like I said, unless you're maintaining large US dollar accounts (which is quite unlikely) it will be converted into Canadian dollars at the bank's prevailing rate which may or may not be advantageous to the merchant (and certainly won't be if the merchant offers any kind of preferred exchange rate to the customer). I doubt many merchants prefer money losing (relatively speaking) transactions, but they'll accept them if it means more total business in the end.

When up in the border town of washington and idaho last summer i didnt see one merchant that accpeted canadian dollars. Now mind you i didnt say there isnt one but i didnt see one.

It depends where you are. Small border towns isolated from major Canadian centers and/or places that don't rely on tourism probably wouldn't accept foreign currency, which would also be correct in Canada. Go to a place like Blaine or Bellingham, Washington and you'd see it much more widely accepted. Ditto for places like Buffalo in New York. A couple of weeks ago, there was an entire mall in suburban Buffalo that was accepting Canadian money at par. Just trying to lure shoppers across the border.

I dont know bout the other states, however i do know that the border towns in texas wont take pesos either.

In San Diego NO ONE accepts pesos despite the fact that most middle and upper income families in Tijuana do most of their nongrocery shopping in malls north of the border. The big chains and malls are here in San Diego so selection is better and prices are lower thus our malls are packed with well to do Mexican families spending their hard earned cash. Then you have the middle class young people who all come north when they want to go clubbing or go out on a fancy date. It all adds up to a pretty penny but they all either pay in dollars or they use plastic.

I was in the US recently and made a few purchases on my VISA. When I got back home and looked at what I was actually charged in CAD, the difference was so small as to be almost insignificant. And this was when it was at 0.92 - now its 94/95 ish.

Its nice to finally be able to look at USD prices and not have to think about conversions. Unless you're dealing with huge amounts of money, the dollar is pretty much at par already.
