  • A soldier in Iraq asks in despair: Why are we here?

After watching his roommate fatally wounded in a roadside bombing, an Army private wonders why the lives of good men are being lost when the Iraqis pose no threat to us and don’t want us there.

Then why is the President of Iraq asking we stay?
I think the Iraqi people are ****ed up so bad, they don't know what they want, which is fine. Disregard what they want, and let's leave.

But don't base your argument on a single soldier's grief at a given moment.

Why do you think the president doesn't ask the troops to leave though? I think it's a simple question of 'you pay for this so I don't have to'.

But I would agree, I don't think they know what they want, it's a whole different world and set of minds, people not used to things we're used to, people with different values. I'm sure they want peace, but it's question of who gets to rule and in that department, everything is in the air and everyone is gunning for it using traditional methods - violence.

I don't see why the US would want to pay for the enivetable anymore. It costs a lot of money, plus lives, so what's in it, what's the gain, I don't see one right now, so it seems smart to me just cut losses and get out.

teenagers ask why they are alive when they wake up with bad hair, im sure somebody who's just had his friend killed will be feelin just abit ****** off at his situation, be it justified or not.

Slaughter acts like we'll just pick up and leave, and that's the end. It won't be the end for anyone. Both Sunni and Shiite are no closer to working out differences, and never will be. Terrorists will see they outlasted all attempts. They took a beating too, but, they're still there.

Sure. There will be even a bigger bloodbath when the US leaves.

A better indicator of the will of the Iraqi people is the opinion of the Iraqi parliament.

I asked an anti-war protestor once what he thought about the civil war that would occur if we brought our troops home and he replied they wouldn't fight each other as they're all muslims short sighted politics of save 1 life now and lose 100 later are funny.

It doesn't take brains to carry a sign. A person should know if the sign is advertising that they're a dumbass, though.

"would occur" The Shiites and Sunnis have been at each other's throats since the Golden Mosque was blown up.

The dander in us pulling out isn't that a civil war "would occur," it's the danger that Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and maybe Egypt will intervene to save the Sunnis while the Iranians intervene to save the Shia. The danger is a [i]regional conflict[/].

This is why the Iraq Study Group wanted to institute a region-wide diplomatic effort. Bush ignored it, and upped the level of violence.

to the OP: It's quite obvious that people who have their comrades killed in battle will be in a huge downer of a mood, to put it mildly. It's really no surprise.

To people in the states, generally: Explain this to me, because our army is an army of conscripts. Why the hell is there so much discontent among people in the US military? didn't they volunteer to basically be carriers of US policy?

I don't want to sound, I just really don't understand.

I think they're frustrated and depressed (a) because they not sure why they're in Iraq (a country which did not attack us or have any plans to), (b) because there appears to be little or no chance of winning, and (c) because the people that we're supposedly in Iraq to help are shooting at them.
