Naw, we all know about the nasty Redcoats and their Hessien thugs.

Only because they were in the 13 colonies.

They are absolutely right.History is just darwinism applied to knowledge and intelligence; absolutely useless when you enjoy creationism.

Well obviously the only important European history is the stuff related to us.

Like when Teddy ****ed up the mighty, evil spanish empire in 1898, making the world safe for democracy.

Well...after Andy Jackson and the boys from Tennessee got involved, we realized that the Europeans weren't much to be concerned with.

Then ya'll had that big ole family fight we had to come in and clear up, but we thought you could handle it from there. We was wrong on that un, so 20 years later we had to come in and settle ya'll down again. We just figured it was easier to babysit after that so we had to start payin attention to the youngins.

Geezus H keerist, you cant go to a friggin 4th of July fireworks display without hearing the 1812 overture. When I was a lad, there was some TV commercial in which Nappy had some companys product in the hand under his coat.

I stand by my estimate. Of course, it's completely anecdotal. The fact that the 1812 overture is played at 4th of July in no way means that most people know the subject matter of the overture (or its name, for that matter).

I think you underestimate the historical ignorance of our population, LoTM.

Ive been around this website enough to find considerable historical ignorance all around. I see no reason to berate ourselves.

You could say there was 'slight collateral damage' though

I've never heard the 1812 overture at a 4th of July fireworks. First it doesn't celebrate an American victory. In fact we were at war with Britain, the ally of Russia, the nation whose victory is celebrated by this tune. Second, it's a mixture of French and Russian tunes and therefore utterly un-American.

Even more fascinating is the fact that the British, those champions of liberty who were the most steadfast opponents of the tyrant Bonaparte, while in the pursuit of saving the world from French despotism attempted to grab Egypt, Syria, Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico, Haiti, the United States, and Cuba but failed in every endeavor.

Does one define German as the political entity that was constructed from the city states that formally conformed as the HRE?
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.
