Well...after Andy Jackson and the boys from Tennessee got involved, we realized that the Europeans weren't much to be concerned with.

Then ya'll had that big ole family fight we had to come in and clear up, but we thought you could handle it from there. We was wrong on that un, so 20 years later we had to come in and settle ya'll down again. We just figured it was easier to babysit after that so we had to start payin attention to the youngins.

I stand by my estimate. Of course, it's completely anecdotal. The fact that the 1812 overture is played at 4th of July in no way means that most people know the subject matter of the overture (or its name, for that matter).

I think you underestimate the historical ignorance of our population, LoTM.

I've never heard the 1812 overture at a 4th of July fireworks. First it doesn't celebrate an American victory. In fact we were at war with Britain, the ally of Russia, the nation whose victory is celebrated by this tune. Second, it's a mixture of French and Russian tunes and therefore utterly un-American.
