Any city without "walkability" isn't a proper city, it's just a giant version of Milton Keynes. LA sounds a real turn-off to me.

All of the coastal areas and downtown are walkable and some of the pseudo-city center areas like old town Pasadena are very walkable. Unfortunately, the stuff built since around 1945 is mostly suburbia. Luckily though since around 1995 they've been doing a lot of redevelopment designed to make areas more walkable. It's mostly in the richer parts of town and downtown but they've made a lot of progress also the walkable parts of LA are also the parts with the best rail and subway access.
