  • Where to live?

In September, my project with the current client wraps up and I'm being probed by my company about offices I'd like to work at for the next project.

So I've got the following choices:

    1) Toronto, Ontario, Canada (the office I'm in now)
    2) New York City, New York, USA
    3) Boston, Massachusetts, USA
    4) London, UK
    5) Seattle, WA

    Pitch me a city, gentlemen!

Seattle and London might offer a good change of pace. I would pick those, depending on the cost of living adjustments that you might receive.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

For NYC and London I would get free access to a corporate apartment for the duration of the project, which is nice.

The NYC corporate apartments are in Manhattan, dunno about London.

Then London is the obvious choice. The main draw back was the cost of living but since that's taken care of you might as well enjoy a year or two abroad.

Of course, I've found in my work experience that they let you request all sorts of cool work locations but in the end you get sent where ever they need you most. On the up side I'm getting sent to Hawaii for 4-6 months and get put up in a company rented funished apartment.

Actually it depends on what projects I have to do here in California as well. Two of our senior geologists just jumped ship to start their own company so I'm looking at a promotion. They might have me flying back and forth between Hawaii and California.

All the investment bankers who I know have much better hours in London versus NYC. My guess it's the same with coders.

If you have a corporate apartment, London sounds like a great time.

If you can afford it, London. The only city that gives it a run for its money is New York.

The caution being if you like extremely busy and dense cities. Toronto doesn't begin to compare to how packed London can be at times.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
                      -Richard Dawkins

For most projects, we don't follow the client's hours. They just want stuff done.

I'm sure they do. And in NYC, I bet they would be on your ass being dickheads 24/7 (imagery included free of charge).

Maybe the work culture differs by industry.

                              Just the work culture.
I currently work for a company based in NYC (I'm in a "remote office"). They do this, but they're only paying for 40 hours/week, so that's all they get.

It'll likely be the same industry. Our main clients are investment banks.
