The United Nations has defined Toronto as the most ethnically diverse city in the world. According to the 1996 census, there were at least 1,000 inhabitants from each of 106 different countries.
Toronto has the world's second-highest percentage of foreign-born residents, after Miami. While the latter's foreign-born population consists of mostly Cubans, Latin Americans, and Haitians, no single nationality or culture dominates the immigration here
