However, I would be hard pressed to find any policy worse than what exists today. A new policy can't help but be an improvement.

      Bad policy isn't a replacement for bad policy. However if the government actually enforces the laws on the books now regarding immigration and this doesn't lead to another huge influx of illegal migrants like in the 80s, I will happily and wholeheartedly apologize to you for selling your arguement short.

        What we have now is no policy, or policy in the breach, so to speak (basically ignoring it). I can't imagine how you could elevate it even to the status of bad policy.

          Let's just say that given the example of the "compromise" of the 80s that the government has a hill to climb before I'll find this to be an acceptable replacement for that.

              Oh really? In 1988 Bush beat Dukakis 53%-47% in the popular vote, and 426-111 (or 80%-20%) in the Electoral College; yet the GOP actually lost seats in both the House and Senate. Off the top of my head, I can't recall another election where a party took the White House by that kind of margin and yet lost seats in both chambers of Congress. It certainly looks like a rebuke to me (though whether it was a rebuke over immigration in particular, I have no idea).

                  That is just the truth and the truth is the best I can give. Just listen to AM talk radio. It's full of froathing at the mouth wingnuts screaming about "filthy Mexicans" and how "the Mexicans are ruining this country". There is a definate racist tone to the rhetoric and these are the people the conservative Republicans were listening to when they demanded "enforcement only". The business wing of the Republican Party has acted as the voice of reason pointing out that we need the cheap labor.

                            Because the Dems picked up seats overall in 1940 FDR's 3rd term election...
                            The GOP picked up a huge number of seats in 1904 (by your logic, McKinley's 3rd term election victory)...
                            Th GOP even picked up a huge number of seats in 1928 (effectivley, Harding's 3rd term election victory)...
