Look if you are going to say we have to find alternatives to gasoline to power transportation as would be the case with draconian oil taxes, then you'll be forced at looking to retool fleets to biodiesel or ethanol or any of a host of other technologies. That in of itself will take forever to work out between retooling the fleets and coming up with a production and distribution system for the new alternative fuels. While improving existing fleet standards is a relatively doable thing while the requisite technology is being developed, existing reserves explored and drilled, etc.
The point being is that the POTUS should be highlighting goals to reduce foreign oil dependence complete with milestones and goals. A timetable to withdrawl if you will.
Apples and Apples man. Youre comparing under a tax eliminating ALL oil consumption. For CAFE your assuming presumably a modest reduction in consumption. Of course that will have less impact. A 100%. What CAFE standards are you talking about? Double current new vehicles? Thats going to take awhile, OR be very costly, or both. You raise taxes you will impact the fuel usage of new vehicles via incentives, plus incent a lot of other things that can reduce consumption.
And whats with this reduction in economic activity? You tax one sector, its taken up by other sectors. People buy less of goods that use a lot of oil, or transport, and buy more of something else. Is that its a tax and takes money out of the economy? You dont want the deficit reduced at this point. Fine, cut another tax. Cut income taxes. Whatever. I just think they have to be phased in carefully, and in conjunction with measures to lessen the pain on those who will feel it most.
Look, if gas jumped to $5/gallon tomorrow, I'd be fine. Some people would be in deep ****.

Actually, Kid's been almostly totally sane here AAHZ. There was a short rant about giving money to corps, and I thought he was gonna go off the deep end there, but he pulled back and has stuck to basic econ.
