This is something that I'd have to experience to believe. I've never had fake meats or cheeses that were anywhere close to the level of quality as the original. If they can't get a simple hot dog or hamburger or slice of cheddar cheese right, then why am I supposed to believe that they can mimic a filet mignon or a salmon steak?Originally posted by General Ludd As a matter of fact, when it comes to chicken, cow, and possibly fish dishes (I haven't had any of those myself), this is completely true. In east asian countries like thailand there are amazingly convincing fake meats for the buddhist vegetarians.
Again, you're flat out ignoring the fact that the spices don't supplant the flavor. They may highlight existing flavor or bring new flavors, but the meat flavor and texture remains absolutely crucial. The meat adds its own flavor. Going further, animal products like cheese, milk, butter, honey, etc. have great flavors that are even more independant from vegetables that are the meat flavors. My point was that meat really does not taste that great in most cases. Only very particular kinds of meat have a really distinct flavour. Cow and chiken certainly have their own flavour and texture, of course, but it is nothing to write home about without any sort of dressing, sauces, or herbs to create the taste that is so appealing. Unseasoned chicken is about as exciting as mashed potatos.
I might also add that the herbs that make meat dishes so exciting are vegetables. The idea that meat is so much more superior to veggies in terms of taste is that much mroe ridiculous when you consider that it's the seeds and leaves of vegetables that give the dish an exciting flavour in the first place.
Finally, I'm not arguing that meat is superior to vegetables in all ways. I love them both. Vegetables and meat both bring different qualties. That's why the majority of humans have omnivorous eating habits. I just find your claim that meat brings next to nothing to be ludicrious. It's an opinion based completely on personal tastes designed only to butress your ideoloical position.
I think about what I'm consuming. I just have no problem eating animals, let alone animal products like milk and honey. I don't see how it's a cop-out to say "I like to eat meat because it tastes good," mainly because I find your justifications to be baseless. So, basically, what i'm saying is that the oneliner position of "I eat meat because it tastes good" is really ****ing ignorant and short sighted and little more than a cop-out in order not think about what you're consuming.
I agree. There are vegetable dishes that have great flavors. However, there are great meat flavors that vegetable dishes just can't replicate.Regardless of that, you can have amazing tastes with or without meat anyways.
Taste is always a factor with food, unless were talking about it from a survival standpoint. You claim that we could get practiacally all the same flavors that we get from meat and animal products if we switched to an entirely vegan diet. I think that that's absurd, and you've done nothing to change my mind on the issue. Since I enjoy eating meat and animal products, and since I have no moral objection to doing so, then my appreciation for the flavor of meat and animal products provides me with a pretty compelling reason for choosing to eat a meat dish.Taste is not a factor in the issue.I'm about to get aroused from watching the pokemon and that's awesome. - Pekka
