well, who cares what the british view is, if you are in you play by the rules.

if you don't want to play by the rules and only care about the benefits, become the 51st state.

stupid islanders... I have never understood the amount of leniency you guys got.

When Scotland splits off, we should keep them and kick Anglo-Hiberno-Wales out.

          Play by the rules.

We are the best abiders of the rules the EU makes - it's France and Germany that ignore the rules when it suits them. At least we are honest in negotiation and will say if there is something we do not like. You guys just vote for it, and then don't play your own rules.

And by bringing in Eastern Europe it's helping us anyway..

I went there. It was a ****ing disappointment.

[TV info]Several thousands of protesters gathered at Bastille plaza. At some point a few hundred violent ones started throwing projectiles at the police, which responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. Many peaceful protesters left the scene[/TV info]

I arrived late at Bastille (I had to wait for the official results in my hometown). Knowing it could be bad, I left the subway about 600m away. I saw Bastille plaza drowned into what I assumed was tear gas (indeed). The smoke was thick well above ground. Like a fog that was located only on the plaza. As I came closer to the plaza (100m maybe), tear gas was already taking an effect on me.

The plaza was surrounded by cops, who were fighting violent protesters inside. In the streets converging to the plaza, many peaceful protesters were stuck, having nothing to do, since the fights prevented us from actually gathering. Plenty had already left when I arrived, because of the strain of tear gas. And for those who stayed, because of no coordination, there ended up being two rendezvous points in opposite directions.
But nothing of an actual demo, as people didn't where and when to go. It was more of a continuous stream of disappointed people, overwhelmingly young. Some were violent (and among them, many were drunk). Most were just sad, notably because the violence made us unable to have an actual opposition rally

Of course, the national and international media was all to happy to show pics of thuggery. And of course, people watching these news were all too happy to consider left wingers as thugs. Those ****ing thugs gave us all a bad name.

                  But we knew that already.

                    bon chance a M Sarkozy.

For those who think that this is a great victory for US style laissez faire, in either hope or fear, it probably wont work out like that. I think Sarkozy's desired end state would still leave France looking more welfare statist than the US is currently. Still more focused on equality, and less of a rat race.

It may make the French welfare state more sustainable, though.

And hopefully it will improve US-French relations. Though I have no doubt that M Sarkozy will stand up strongly for French interests.

Most importantly, the time is now for M Sarkozy to reach out to the banlieues, to show he wants to integrate them in France, and to make the case that his reforms will help to do so.

Yeah, he only has to do and say the exact opposite of what he did for the past 5 years

Anybody else had the feeling that he sounded veeery (perhaps too much) ambitious in both dmoestic and foreign affairs yesterday? I mean having high goals is all fine, but if he doesn't deliver this could backfire quite seriously....

Yep, right, those who set cars (and sometimes people) afire are no 'scums', they are 'elite of the nation', 'role models', he needs to award them the 'legion d'honneur' I guess.

I think the exact opposite is a little bit strong, don't you?

                              Indeed, that was hyperbole.

What he has to do to reintegrate the ghetto dwellers in the French mainstream is:

                              - Make speeches saying that all French people are on the same side, bring the French together. In his campaign and before, he systematically divided between two sides. Generally "those who get up early" and various words he ascribed to the leeches.

                              - Restore trust and respect between the police and a broad part of the population. During his tenure as interior minister, he made the police much more geared toward repression, and he shut down "proximity police", whose job was to provide day-to-day order and conviviality in the cités.

                              - Eventually destroy the ghettoes, by providing cheap housing on the whole territory, instead of the current concentrations. To that effect, the law demands cities to have at least 20% of public housing. The city he ruled between 1983 and 2002 (Neuilly sur Seine) has 2.5%, one of the lowest rate in Paris' metro.

Don't have to dream on this. He will probably encourage the current policy of 'urban revitalization', i.e. subsidizing the renovation of old buildings in popular urban neighborhoods, so that rents can be raised, the number of apartments reduced (by combining existing superficy in larger ones), and poor dwellers sent to the suburbs, where a special law against transport strikes will hopefully protect their indentured freedom of going to work every morning for a crook selling weapons in Africa.
