I don't think a hurricane would do much to an old European city. Most of the buildings tend to be built of stone rather than plywood or whatever other cheap crap they use these days."The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists."

Actually I'm sure that the current building code in Florida is stricter then anyplace in Europe. (all new houses have to be built with steel reinforced cinder blocks. ) AND it's enforced.
Granted that sometimes no matter how well a building is built it won't help, but you'll find that most damage from hurricanes in florida is older buildings or trailer parks. And roofs, of course. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

How does a hurricane compare to a decent blizzard? This winter's big storm tore down a lot of trees in my neighbourhood, but caused hardly any damage to buildings. Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

In Houston, most of the damage to houses came from trees that were uprooted due to high winds than from the actual storm."Yay Apoc!!!!!!!" - bipolarbear

Last I checked, the levees are in the jurisdiction of Louisiana...in other words, a state issue. Has nothing to do with any administrations. Also, since when is it the role of the federal government to evacuate people? Florida has done it for years very effectively. The fact is that the mayor and the governor are to blame for not evacuating. Do you even live in the US Elok? Have you ever even been through a hurricane before? Your comments make me think you are a either in Europe or some North easterner who doesn't know dick about hurricanes.Destruction? Of course not. NOLA got wiped out because the levees were in a disgraceful condition. That wasn't entirely Bush's fault, IIRC we'd been ignoring that problem for decades. Which is why we blame W's administration primarily for not evacuating, and for making such a colossal fuster-cluck of the relief effort afterwards. What do your remarks have to do with any of this?
Oh, and Provost, very nice post. You surprised me with your use of the word "cretin." It went very well with the other three words in your post clearly showing your vastly superior intelligence.

What does the wealth of the US have to do with the government's inability to handle aid? Even in the US, 400 Million is a lot of money, money that can do good. That the Bush administration couldn't handle that money is a huge disgrace. As for the US needing it, who gives a ****? Others gave it a a gift, which means it wasn't solicited in the first place. If you don't like reality, change it! me

It Congress that controls the levees. You can blame Louisiana's Congressional delegation for spending money that should have gone to flood control projects on pork ones for God knows how many years for destroying NOLA if you like.Originally posted by EyesOfNight

Sorry, I've lived all my life in Maryland, the nice, sane state where any hurricanes that hit cause minor flooding at worst. I have no idea whose responsibility it is to evacuate people, true; however, comparing FL to LA is absurd. Florida gets hit by a nasty hurricane roughly once every five or ten years. They hardly need to be told how to handle hurricanes. But I suppose we should only blame the Bush administration for its ludicrous handling of the relief efforts. Which is quite bad enough. As for the levees, wasn't the army corps of engineers responsible for their maintenance? I'm vague on the details, since it really makes little difference from my POV. After "Mission Accomplished," Abu Ghraib, Brownie, Gitmo, et cetera, this is just one more embarrassment.Originally posted by EyesOfNight
