There was a big debate on CFC about how America always helped everyone but now that Americans needed help none of their foreign "friends" were willing to lift a finger.

There were also a couple Yanks who insisted that accepting foreign aid would be incompatible with US honour.

Wow...400 million. Notice who the biggest donors are? In other words it's a drop in the bucket and our close "allies" offered nearly nothing. Hell, Kuwait and the UAE make up half of the offered money. How sad is that?

WTF cares about per capita GDP in terms of something like this? The US has, by far, the most money in absolute terms to throw at the situation, which is all that matters in this case.

I'm far more concerned about how they spent our money.

That they didn't collect $400 million doesn't bother me all that much, and wouldn't bother me at all if the situation had been handled competantly (because it was our problem, and should've been handled internally).

While money is nice, the US never lacks the ability to spend its own money and more money wouldn't have appreciably altered the immedate situation.

BUt if the US refused offers of troops, ships, medicines etc etc, I don't know what they were thinking.

I'm not sure what Canada offered but some helicopters, supply and replenishment ships should have been able to get to that part of the gulf in a couple of days and it would have bveen relatively simple to assign Canadian or British forces some search and rescue zones

The funny thing is that when Katrina made land fall it only had 125mph winds, a weak category 3. The only reason there was so much destruction and death was because people weren't evacuated properly. If that storm had made landfall in Florida it wouldn't have even gotten international attention and would have been a weekend headline.

Actually Luxemborg is and the US is tied with Norway.

Luxembourg and Norway's GDP is nowhere near the United States'.

Death? Of course. People can't die if they're not there.

Destruction? Of course not. NOLA got wiped out because the levees were in a disgraceful condition. That wasn't entirely Bush's fault, IIRC we'd been ignoring that problem for decades. Which is why we blame W's administration primarily for not evacuating, and for making such a colossal fuster-cluck of the relief effort afterwards. What do your remarks have to do with any of this?

You claimed the US was the richest so the amount of money the average citizen makes really seems it would be the key factor here. Of course you never let facts get in the way so please continue your troll/threadjack.

Houston and the surrounding cities got evacuated without Bush doing a thing.

It would seem like the key factor to a moron, yes.
