  • Computer tech help.

OK, so a month or two back my old computer died and I bought a new one. I am believe the power supply on the old computer died but I preferred not to fix the old machine and instead bought a new Window's Vista machine. Unfortunately, all of my files are on my old hard drive (which is EIDE) and my new computer is SATA so I can't just plug the hard drive in and use it as a slave.

No problem, I go and buy a Deluxe USB 2.0 to IDE cable and plug it in. I hear the old hard drive power up and the Vista Desktop gives me the USB Storage device is plugged in icon in the lower right. So far so good. I open the Windows Explorer and sure enough external hard drive D:/ is listed. I click on D:/ and what I get in the explorer is... not directory tree I am used to seeing on my old computer. The master directories are only Dell, Program files, Sources, Tools, Users, and Windows. I'm trying to move my old music and video libraries from my old hard drive to my new one but I can't even see them. What gives?

Was there a hidden recovery partition on the old drive?

I never put any partition on the hard drive. It was just a Dell computer which came preloaded with Windows XP. The new computer uses Vista. I honestly can't explain this.

Some manufacturers put a hidden partition with an image of the original install on the hard drive that they use to restore a computer if it gets borked.

edit: wait, WTF? A Users folder? That would be part of Vista, not XP...

I just noticed something. The name of the removable D: Drive is "recovery". I don't need to recover anything other then my music and video libraries along with a few games but I can't see any of those on my old disk.

What's in Users? Perhaps it's renaming "Doc&Settings" to that.

Anyway, try a search for a known filename ...

I've tried seaching for *.mp3, *.wmv, *.wma but all turn up nothing. It's like the files aren't even there though I know they are.

All I want is my files.

It's also saying D: is a 9.99 GB drive when it is actually a 115 GB drive.

How do I get it to read the whole drive?

Easiest solution is to get an IDE card and plug that in.

I guess I was right... but you're probably seeing a partition on your new computer, not the old.
