British Aggressors! Coming Soon To A Theater Near You!
An American lecturing us on smugness, arrogance and racism! Well f**k me!
Well it wasn't so very long ago that the Irish (and Catholics in general) were subject to heavy discrimination here in the US. I know, because I am a victim of it. The country used to be run by white Anglo-Saxons protestants. Kennedy broke the mold. But, until Kerry was nominated in 2004, no non WASP was even nominated for president, IIRC.
In my view, America's racism is largely attributably to the sons of England.

Ned, you are blaming the English for actions of your own countrymen?!
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Wasn't Kennedy a non-WASP who also was nominated for President? Did he somehow skip from nomination to candidacy?
What about Al Smith?

I mentioned Kennedy.
Al Smith was defeated because he was Catholic. While his nomination was a step in the right direction, the fact that he was defeated because of his religion is more important than the fact that he was nominated despite it.
I wonder where all the racism in Europe comes from. For a very long time I detected no racism (hatred based on ethic origin) in the Roman Empire. That changed though in the early 400's. A wave of hatred of the Germans swept the West and one of the Roman's best commanders ever, Stilicho, who was a Vandal, was killed in a general mass slaughter of Germans in Italy. The Germans has just invaded Italy and other parts of the western empire, but were driven off by Stilicho. Perhaps the loyalties of the Germans inside Italy were in question. But it is clear the average Roman no longer trusted the Germans and had a great deal of anger towards them.
Was this the beginning?
"Stilicho's fall opened the way on one hand to friendly relations with Constantinople, and on the other to the ambitions of Alaric. It was the expression of the simmering hostility of Italy towards men of barbarian blood, in fact the massacre of many of the foreigners in the country, which gave the Gothic king more than adequate excuse for swooping on Italy before the year was out.
Alaric marched straight on Rome, ignoring Honorius in Ravenna. The city was rapidly reduced to starvation, and plague broke out. Alaric demanded all the treasure within it and all the barbarian slaves."

Racism existed way before that. As usual, the so called strangers were the scapegoat for everything that went wrong in the empire. True enough they were part of the problem, but at least the German mercenaries did keep the Roman Empire alive for another century or so. That you don't detect any racism before 400 is ridiculous. Check any historical source and you'll see what I mean. In any case, the fact that manumissiones caused many former slaves to rise up high in the administration of the High Empire, made many people jealous. It's a simple explanation, but it's true nuff

Instead of wondering where racism in Europe comes from, I'd ask myself where xenophobia in general comes from. It's a universal feature among humans, and a very strong one at too
