He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead

I read this years and years ago. Didn't it come out in the 80's or something?

Samit Basu's GameWorld Trilogy, if made into movies, would be awesome beyond all comparison. Specially the first book, which is both part of a trilogy as well as a stand-alone book.

Ashok Banker's Ramayana series IS being made into a big-budget movie, and I'm quite thankful for that. It'll be the FIRST modern retelling of the epic.

Why'd they choose Warcraft, and not Starcraft? WC's plot is just an orgy of recycled high-fantasy ****e that TSR stole from Tolkien thirty-odd years ago, then somebody else borrowed it from TSR, and so on, and so on...we've already got Eragon and the LOTR movies, and The Hobbit by PJ is entirely possible.

Starcraft is derivative of Aliens and other movies, but it's less of an obvious ripoff, at least. It has a distinctive mythology of its own to work with. We've seen men with swords getting overrun by orcs a billion times. We have not yet seen men with powered armor getting overrun by zerglings.

EDIT: Which is not to say that SC isn't ultimately derived from Tolkien as well. Just replace "Protoss" with "Elf," and "Zerg" with "Orc," and SC is pretty much LOTR. You've got your ancient, superhuman, spiritual beings who refuse to accept change, you've got your mindlessly hateful fecund vermin, and you've got puny humans to save the former from the latter. But it looks different, at least.

To nitpick, Starcraft is derivative of Warhammer 40k more than anything else.

I wouldn't know, I don't play PnP RPGs and such; a PnP is basically a computer game, only you do all the die-rolling work normally left to the computer and there are no graphics or sound. The fact that it "exercises the imagination more" is not a sign of superiority, any more than a guy who jerks off to fantasies in his head is somehow superior to a guy who uses porn. Wait, Warhammer is that dingbat game with a billion painted metal figurines of "Space Goblins" with plasma rifles, isn't it? Blecch. At least CCG cards are cheap, lightweight and portable.

But I digress. How derivative? I was under the impression that Starcraft was at least marginally original.
