Aeromonas is a well known fish pathogen. It's one of the primary reasons for finding one's finned pets floating upside down in the fish tank. Aeromonas gastroenteritis is generally about as severe as "traveller's diarrhea". Keep him well hydrated especially with medically approved electrolyte replenishing solutions like Rehydralyte and he should do fine. Aeromonas gastroenteritis however is rather uncommon. I wonder how the diagnosis was made? Generally by the time the cultures are done the illness is over. Occasionally Aeromonas may infect the biliary system - that's more serious and should be treated with IV antibiotics. Rarely it may develop into a hemolytic-uremic syndrome like the hemorraghic E.coli syndrome. That would require hospitalization too. If your friend doesn't have skin lesions then he probably doesn't have HUS.
What do you mean that he may have Hepatitis B? Is he jaundiced? If the blood tests have been done, which generally requires only a few days, there should be no question one way or the other.
It sounds like right now his lumbar disc disease is the least of his problems, but so far you haven't told me anything that would lead me to fear for his eventual recovery.
