i too find this subject very interesting, i've read some good books on it recently, will give you details when i get home.
Don't get me wrong, I also find it interesting.

Interesting how so many people can be ****ed up and clueless down the ages...

Some of the most beautiful buildings in the world are religious - it doesn't change the fact that they are all built on a lie...
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

It's fascinating how strongly atheists feel they have to disprove and show their dismay at religion. It must mean we do something right, since they obviously care.

I wouldn't base much off of Mobius...

This particular atheist is fine with people having their own beliefs.

As long as it does not get out out context or control.

          That is my current stance.

Oh, but it's not only Mobius who acts like this.

The poster in question does not represent 'all atheists'.

Branding us non-believers all with the same mindset is exactly the same as atheists branding believers in the same way.

Generalisation is never useful. Anyway, the debate on old christian sects is far more interesting...Let's move back to that.

I know that not all atheists are like this. Of course! But I can assure you, I have seen my share of people with this attitude. I'm only pointing out that since these atheists obviosuly think religion is such a big deal, and use so much time and effort to combat it, there must be something we believers is doing right. Interest is a good thing.

Anyhow, I'm also very interested in the original debate, so I'm all for focusing on that.

Every human thinks he is right, every human is flawed.

                  That is all. Let's continue.

Hence the reason why there are some many religions and splinters of religions on this planet...

Which is the one true religion - which is the one true faction of said religion!!???

All I ask is for you to answer that one simple question.

The point of the thread is not to answer questions, unless
they are delivered in the context of the thread subject.

Like why the various sects of christianity fought each other
in earlier times, and why certain cults regarded themselves
to be superior...Why not word your query in that manner?

The ignore list exists for a reason.

Yea, and the LORD created the ignore list, and saw that, without MOBIUS, Apolyton was good.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

WRT the original post (I agree Mobius is really not worth paying attention to, at least not here where he's failing to even make logical sense):

We Orthodox are out of communion with the Ethiopians and Copts, but we're quite fond of both. The Copts only differ from us in some doctrinal point on the divinity or humanity of Christ, IIRC; they don't think he was fully human, I think.

I seem to remember the Ethiopians as representing a convergence of Jewish, Christian, Muslim and indigenous traditions in terms of their forms of worship (they dance!), though doctrinally they're pretty close to us too. In my experience, they tend to be very friendly and warm crowd. My priest has an Ethiopian blessing cross he got from a bishop there. BTW, are you aware that they claim to be in possession of the Ark of the Covenant?

I know nothing of the Assyrians. The Old Believers are the ones who insist on using the Julian calendar and such, aren't they? I attend an Antiochian parish, and have since the age of seven, so I don't know much about Russian or Greek church politics. But I hear they have a rather distorted image of us, too: my GF is interested in Orthodoxy and was doing some research online when she stumbled across a site claiming that we "modernists" don't even fast...nothing about us eating O.B. babies, at least.
