If you get a chance to try it, I highly recommend Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout.

I recall reading an article written my Michael Jackson "The Beer Hunter" comparing the number of breweries licenced in all the major beer producing countries. The UK was third, Germany second with 50% more then anyone else in Europe, while the US was in 1st with some absurd amount like 10-15 times more breweries then any other country.

There just are more choices here plus a lot of the European breweries are still brewing their traditional brews for their country where as in the US people make beers of EVERY tradition and even mix and match styles to create totally new combinations.

There are lots of companies which specialize in Belgian style beers. New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, CO comes to mind as does the Pizza Port Brewery just north of San Diego. Tomme Arthur, the Master Brewer at Pizza Port, is the only no Belgian person to ever be awarded membership in the prestigious Belgian Brewers Association. The story goes that the King of Belgium was doing a diplomatic trip in California a few years back and they stopped by Pizza Port to see this brewery that supposedly was totally dedicated to brewing Belgian style beers; he loved it so much the King inducted them via royal decree. The only foreigner ever awarded such an honor.

It's a seasonal brew, so you might have to wait till November to find it, but it is well worth it. One word of warning...they recently jacked the alcohol up from 8.2% to 10.6%, so I wouldn't drink the whole six pack in one sitting.

I'f the U.S. were included in this poll, I'd rank it after Belgium but above the U.K.

I think that the U.S. microbreweries generally do a better job of producing English style ales than they do of German style ales and lagers. I've yet to find a decent American Hefeweizen or a decent American Munich Helles. American Microbrewers tend to go on the hoppy side, and the varieties that they use don't seem to fit with the maltier German styles. The American attempts at Pils are better, but I'd still prefer a German or Czech pils (provided that they're fresh... that's a tough proposition for imported Pilsners).

I also tend to prefer Belgian made Belgian ales to American made, though there are some quality American producers. However, there's a Quebecois brewery (Unibroue) that makes fantastic Belgian style beers and, IMO, tops any U.S. Belgian-style brewer.

I've been going there and also to ratebeer.com though I give the edge to beeradvocate since they have their own magazine in addition to their website.

I'm going to make a shameless plug and note that local San Diego brewer Stone Brewing Company took 6th best beer in the world according to beer advocate while Alesmith (another local brewer in San Diego) took 9th place world wide. Not a bad showing for my neck of the woods.

I just had an Arrogant Bastard Ale last night. If you like hops, then you'll love it.
