I agree; CivII was heads and shoulders above anything else out there at the time. And while I love CivIV, and it is clearly an improvement over CivII in every way, it doesn't stand out from the crown quite as much.

Here. I have made a silly graph to illustrate what I mean. I think it's pretty much the consensus among Civ fans.

Civ1 was way superior to most other games in its time, so that's a great game. Civ2 improved the series and widened the already large margin. Civ3 improved on Civ2 in some ways, but regressed in others, and on the whole was not much more impressive than the five-year-old game it was replacing. Civ4 is clearly the best game by a significant margin, but it's probably not as good relative to its context as the first two games. No big deal, though, it's still awesome.

I think almost everyone likes I, II, and IV, and understands all of them helped make the series good. But as for which one belongs on a "best games" list, it's hard to say, because that's such an arbitrary thing to discuss anyway.

No way Civ III was as good as you are rating it, Jaguar.

I dunno. It wasn't a BAD game; it just wasn't as fun as it should have been. It improved with the expansions, and some mods--I'd love to see a "Double Your Pleasure" type mod for CivIV.

However, it's way too far above the "average" curve, relative to the other games.

CivIII was a decent game. We just didn't like C3 because we already had a game that was just as good as it, and we'd had it for five years.

I love that you care so much about the ratings on my entirely subjective and abstract graph.

Expansions shouldn't be used to finish games.

Oh yes...at least the original was incredibly addictive.

I remember playing it once and it slowly dawning on me that I was starting to get really tired. I looked over at the clock...it was three in the morning I had to get up in three hours and go to work

                        A good top five:

My personal list would have Command & Conquer Red Alert on it, but otherwise a solid list.

Diablo not being on the list just makes me happy

I played Half Life to the end, in a short period of time. I couldn't stop.

I don't normally play that genre of game.
