The "living with grandmother" threw up a red flag to me. Who has not had a pet, felt depressed one day, and just spoke out loud "to the pet"? The reason why she "spoke" to the dog was because it was her friend and companion.

Look, confiding secrets to her cat is .... a bit odd, but I can understand that.
Feeling the need to mention you're talking to animals to national news outlets, about how her cat knew all her secrets is very odd.
Of course I do strange stuff. Never would I feel the need to mention them to a newspaper.Comment

Personally I think the cat was probably just thinking 'that human is making noises at me' and isn't remotely aware of her inner world of intrigue. Of course it kept the secret. So would an egg or a concrete bollard by the same token.Speaking of Erith:
