Will someone think of the cubs?

Yes, it's not a cub, but I had it readily available, and there's snow in it.

As the temperature rises, more people will move north. Therefore, the food problem for polar bears will be solved.

Isn't that a rather harsh treatment of people ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

The Bush Administration has been accused once again of gagging US government scientists by getting them to agree not to talk about polar bears, sea ice and climate change during official overseas trips.

A leaked memorandum issued by a regional director of the US Department of the Interior states that officials within the US Fish and Wildlife Service will limit their discussions when travelling in countries bordering the Arctic region because of sensitivities about climate change.

"This traveller understands the administration's position on climate change, polar bears and sea ice and will not be speaking on or responding to these issues," says the memo from the regional director Richard Hannon to his boss, the director of the Fish and Wildlife Service.

It is not the first time that US government officials have been accused to trying to gag scientists on climate change.
                a) US Department of Interior officials = scientists
                b) Perhaps the reasons officials such as Hannon (not scientists) to remain mum on the subject of polar bears is because their total populations have actually increased since hunting bans of 1970's and that the debate rages on whether Polar bears should be placed on the endangered list based purely on fears of global warming and impact to their envirpnemnts when their numbers would suggest otherwise.
                c) Perhaps when looking at chilling effects on scientific commentary one should moreso look at death threats such as those levied against Dr. Timothy Ball rather than veiled conspiratorial governmental rumors.

How very dense of you, Oggie. The US Fish & Wildlife Service employes lots of scientists and is one of the leading bodies for studying wildlife in the US. It gets lots of direct grants from the government to carry out its research & monitoring duties.

The Fish & Wildlife Service is part of the Department of the Interior so gagging everyone in the DoI also gags the scientists at the Fish & Wildlife Service. There is no explination for this other then political appointees/the administration are trying to gag scientists because they know the results of real science don't support their denaliest policies.

I've worked in several US federal research agencies and can tell you categorically the 'officials' are rarely scientists. I'ld be very surprosed if regional director Hannon was a scientist. Beuracrats and administrators yes, scientists no.

It looks like a blanket ban to me; who do you think are going to international confrences to talk about research? Do you think, by chance, the people who wrote the research papers?

They don't want anyone talking thus the blanket ban.

This thread is actually fun - officals told to be careful about their wordings talking with other nations expanded into gagging scientist
