I think the producers like a surprise or two along the way-- As you say , it increases voting and viewership. The best singer often doesn't win the show anyway

Chris Daughtry was far and away the best last year. Go figure, he's the most successful despite a what, 5th place finish?

I saw Indian Idol a couple years ago (while visiting my family), and it was the greatest thing ever. We were watching a judgment episode. First thing to note is that there was one girl and something like twenty dudes. So one of the guys gets eliminated, and everyone becomes really sad. And a guy starts bawling. The girl was apparently dismayed that she wasn't the first to start crying, so she viciously swipes the poor guy's handkerchief away from him. Hindu civilization

He was far and away the best last year and is the only one from last year that I would consider buying a disc

IN most years I can point to someone that got eliminated earl. heck in the first one there was this girl Tamara? Gray or something that was better than the 2nd and 3rd place foks and arguably just as good as Clarkson ( although she seems to have commercial success)

The history of the show is rife with people succeeding despite a lower placing or failing despite a high one

Voteforthe worst HAS to have him as their pick

He's the pick for next week (as Asher showed), but he hasn't had any VoteForTheWorst support up until now. He actually beat out the VFTW male pick (Sundance) this week. It's inexplicable...

          Tamara? Gray

Tamyra Gray. I agree that she was far better than Justin Guarini and an equal to Kelly Clarkson. Her early dismissal was also a crime, but at least that crime was perpetrated by American voters, not Indian ones...

She lost the week she sang with laryngitis.

Just out of curiosity, in what country is the America Idol Call-In Center?

Holy ****. You may be on to something with that question. You don't need to flood the competition with overseas voters when you have the power to misreport the votes of actual Americans...

Yup and my recollection was she actually finished 4th behind a punky rocker chick That I believe disappeared from public sight.

VFTW picked Sundance -- that surprises me since I thought he was reasonably good among a very mediocre guys field

Right now IMHO the top 4 singers so far have all been women

I wouldn't care. If someone has been the BEST week after week, I would not turf them for one bad performance if there were other singers that had been pretty consistently mediocre

VFTW claims that they're interested in picking people who are both bad and interesting. Sundance screwed some songs up royally, but it was always funny watching the train wreck. Sanjaya, OTOH, is just talentless and boring; his performances suck and there's nothing interesting about them. I don't really understand why VFTW has latched onto him now; maybe they're just running out of delciously bad people...

Agreed. Might even be the top 5...

Well, what tends to happen is that some singers are percieved to be "safe" by the voting public and those people vote furiously for those they want to keep up who are not percieved to be in safe territory. When it gets too exaggerated the "safe" singer finds themselves voted out. Its what happened to Daughtery last year, IMO.

Agreed. Even if people vote for their real favorite, they are not voting as furiously as the powervoters.

Last year on Canadian idol a high-schooler that was not good made it pretty far on the strength of high school powervoters that could register hundreds of votes each. They can counterbalance thousands of viewers that do not vote or vote way less
