Dude, both were bad, but while Persia was your typical oriental despotism, Sparta was North Korea bad, for all the freedom stuff thrown in the movie, one of the battles between Athens (which was still far from perfect) and persia would have been better, after all it is Athens which is admired, only nazis admire Sparta.

it's one of those things, that even if the movie is based off a comic book, the original comic book story got it so wrong it has to be fiction. It'd be like a movie about hitler's human compassion that was based on a comic book. Well even if it was a comic book that glorified hitler and was obviously factually incorrect it doesnt mean that a movie that uses the wrong is discounted

a replication of a faulty work doesnt mean the replication is any less faulty. its like bizarro superman cloning himself.

that said, anyone with half a brain has to realized this was a work of fiction. anyone duped into believing it as fact deserves ridicule.

Absolutely shocking, and totally immoral and adharmic behaviour is condoned here!
That was very common in many places during Antiquity and Middle Ages. The Persians decapitated the messengers if they didn't like the message

I never fully understood this practice but I guess they thought they were sending a message

I guess Spartans were not the ideal of Democracy, but again it was the Persians that tried to subjugate the Spartans and not the other way around so they did fight for their freedom.

Don't take any offense but either you exaggerate or the audience you're referring to is naive.

I am getting the feeling that you never felt that way when you were watching other movies that were trashing nations and cultures other than your likes, but on the other hand I might be wrong

            • I enjoy very much reading threads about history.

Then I think to me self, self:

History is reported and we believe in what we read, what if the recorded history is incorrectly skewed?

Then I think what if the only piece of History available to man in say 150 years is Wikipedia?

              or even
              ~shudder~

              Apolyton?

What then will people debate about, the authenticity of this lot?

People, PLEASE go and do some research for yourself, experience it first hand then come tell us what thou hath retained unto everlasting knowledge!

Go read a book, study hard and pay close attention to detail!!

                  Uhh.....

I think the racism was from the other side, with the Persians being portrayed as sick, twisted, degenerate, filthy, and bestial creatures.
They were, I read it in a (comic)book

My objection is not the blood, actually. It's to the glorification of said bloodiness.
I bet you found Kill Bill offensive too.

And as I said, should not humans be trying to move away from bloodsport, instead of revelling in it?
Sure. Having said that, what's wrong with fake bloodsport?

It appears that someone has not read my post.
The one where you whined that the Spartans tossed a messenger down the well(so did the Athenians, by the way)? What about the Ionian Greek King who requested that his son be exempt from Xerxes' draft because it was his sole heir, and for the temerity Xerxes had him and the son crucified?

The values which I described were the values of the city-state of Sparta. And the 300 were fighting for those values.
But not the thousands of the other Greeks, who came from Democratic stats as well as autocratic ones.

Course, I'd like to see any Indian civilization that was even a limited democracy. Before British rule.

                          • I just saw a movie that'll give your eyes boners, make your balls scream and make you poop DVD copies of THE TRANSPORTER. It's called 300. I don't know what the title has to do with the movie, but they could've called it KITTENS MAKING CANDLES and it'd still rule.

It's about these 300 Greek dudes who stomp the sugar-coated **** out of like a million other dudes. I have a feeling that a lot of high school sports coaches are going to show this film to their teams before they play. Also, gay dudes and divorced women are going to use screen captures for computer wallpaper.

The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it's sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting.
If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, "I need some extra sauce packets"
guess what? You're getting twenty sauce packets because your face will punch him in the brain.

I can't spoil the plot because THANK GOD THERE ISN'T ONE. Just ass kicking that kicks ass that, while said ass is getting kicked, is kicking yet more ass that's hitting someone's balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.

TWO COOL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE AND ONE THING I DIDN'T
                            LIKE:

                            COOL THING ONE:
                            HEAVY METAL DURING BATTLE SCENES

Who gives a **** if the music isn't historically correct? LORD OF THE RINGS could've used some Journey.
This movie has that chu-CHUNG kind of metal that you hear in your head when your shift supervisor at Wetzel's Pretzel is telling you that you'll have to stay for clean up and you wish you had a sock filled with quarters in your hand.

                            COOL THING TWO:
FOES, MINI-BOSSES AND A BIG BOSS

Basically, the Greek dudes are fighting these Persian dudes, but the director, who must have a dick made of three machine guns, does it all like a video game. The Greeks fight through every death metal video from the last ten years. There's wave after wave of giants, freaks, ninjas, mutants, wizards, and a hunchback who looks like he's got Rosie O'Donnell on his back.

Would I have been happy if Dom DeLuise from HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART I had shown up? Maybe, but this movie more than makes up for that glaring oversight.

                            NOT SO GOOD THING:
                            DUDE NUDITY ("DUDE-ITY")

These are Greek times, when there were a lot of naked women around. And there are some naked women in this film, but almost every naked woman scene has a muscular dude giving the screen an ass picnic.
Dude-ity is something directors put in their movies so people will think they're serious, I guess, and not just throwing in naked hotties.

Any directors reading this - IT'S OKAY TO JUST THROW IN NAKED HOTTIES.

Can't someone make a movie about naked Amazons and call it PAUSE BUTTON?

My final analysis is 300 the most ass-ruling movie I've seen this year, and will probably be the King of
2007 unless someone makes a movie where a pair of sentient boobs fights a werewolf.

I think indians and iranians can be "aryan" in the same way spaniards are "latins", which doesnt mean spaniards are the same as the people from Latium who spoke latin, or that indians/pakistanis are the same as the aryan invaders of thousands of years ago
