I simply wonder why Bush would suddenly get an aversion to allowing pork, considering he never did previously. Stories about finding religion are a bit more compelling when not done for convenience.

I care not why pork dies only that it does. I won't shed many tears over the fact Bush might find it convenient to do the right thing.

Mark my words, it is fact the bill will be vetoed. The new bill sent up will have to be clean from a time table perspective but very likely just as chock a block full of bacon as the last.
edit - and yes that pisses me off.

I'd veto that one as well were I in charge. The President needs the power numerous Governors around the country have: the line item veto.

If what I predicted transpires, I can guarantee W will happily put his stamp of approval on said bill.

The line item veto is a blatant violation of the separation of powers as envisioned in the US Constitution.
Why don't you simply turn the legislature into a body whose only function is to either pass or reject legislation proposed by the President?

Lots of American states seem to have worked just fine with it.

Over 170 people killed in a series of coordinated bomb attacks in Baghdad - wow, imagine how many would have died if we didn't have this surge in place...
