I've looked into this New Cronology thing some time back (it is possible even that I started a thread here). Not too deeply, but I looked. It's quite fascinating, actually.
The originators and supporters are not dumb, Fomenko is a professor of differential geometry in Moscow IIRC, Kasparov is a chess champion, and there are others. They might be crazy but they aren't dumb.
The theory may be contrived, but I've read some rebuttals and they are even worse. Serious scientists either can't or won't write a simple explanation of why Fomenko is wrong. Back when I read it, it was all either ad hominems or "oh really" arguments. The latter being "he says that this king was actually that king - oh really?"
