I'd actually be curious to know how many US presdients didn't have ancestors who owned slaves. Probably not Kennedy, possibly not the Roosevelts or Hoover, but I'll bet most everyone else had a slaveowner back there somewhere.

Bill Clinton possibly doesn't have any slave owning ancestors; despite being from the South his family was not by any means wealthy enough. The Bushes probably don't (Connecticut). Reagan and Carter, who knows. Nixon of course had to have ancestors that owned slaves, massacred Indians, and were Pyramid building overseers...I'm beginning the "Path to Power" book about LBJ. IIRC half his family were rich and half poor, and the rich half probably owned slaves. Before that, who knows, I would say 1/2 did and 1/2 didn't. I bet some had ancestors who had indentured servants in colonial times.

But it's all a moot point. While surely we shouldn't chastise a general "sorry for slavery" apology (although some tightasses seem to think that is the End of the World), I don't think any specific person alive today owes any specific person an apology for owning their ancestry.
