So being black is about inheriting a neurotic grudge? How is that important? My ancestors didn't fight in the Revolutionary War, but I'm still American. I doubt any of them ever owned slaves (black slaves in America, that is), but I'm still white.
And the fact is, you can't visually tell the difference between descendant-of-African-slaves and descendant-of-African-immigrants. If the KKK lynches a guy, it'll be because he's dark. If the cops pull a guy over when he wasn't speeding, it'll be because he's dark. If a kid's raised with the expectation that he'll never do anything but shoot hoops and drink malt liquor, it'll be because he's dark. He could be a pure-blooded Australian Aborigine, but they'll still call him ******. Is the black community so dense as to think ancestry means jack?

Yes you can, depending on where the African immigrants are from in Africa. Obama's half Kenyan, a continent away from the West African Bantu homeland of most of the slaves transported to America.
I think most people rightly think of african-american as a cultural group, more than a purely racial one. African-Americans who are descendants of American slaves tend to share, broadly, and to greater and lesser degrees, common speech patterns, religious styles, attitudes towards family, etc. Note well that this allows for a wide degree of variation, and at the extreme a high degree of assimilation, and that probably even a 100% assimilated descendant of slaves is accepted by most to some degree. The question of the relationship of "American African-Americans" to descendants of West India immigrants (like Colin Powell for example) is complex, but given that the West Indian experience, while different, still shared a certain amount in common with the African-American experience, and that most West Indian immigrants have lived in and raised their children in heavily African-American communities, this difference is still probably less than that between African-Americans and an AFRICAN American. Esp a family that has been married into the white community since arriving on these shores. OTOH I suspect most African-Americans still recognize that a breakthrough for Obama is a breakthrough for them anyway, just as any Southie dwelling Irish American saw the connection to Jack Kennedy, despite the establishment father, the money, the Brookline upbringint, the prep school - Ivy education.

So George Washington's pants owned slaves and Barrack Obama has those same pants in his closet? I'm confused.

Only a Republican would smear an opponent because of something his great-great-great-great grandfather supposedly did.
This must be the most far-fetched smearing campaign I've seen in a long time.
