On the other hand you have some guy who never left his hometown, never got much education and thinks Iraq and Iran are the same country. House is mortgaged, he is scraping to make ends meet. Has 5 kids.

Kids aren't a measure of achievement any more than money is. However, in the scenario laid out, I don't see how you could say a stupid schlub with five kids is more successful than someone with a "fulfilled life".
