but to raise them in poverty? would THAT be an achievement?
Yes. It would be an achievement, especially if all five lived long enough for themselves to reproduce and continue the success of that genetic line.

"This is your great-grandfather Sloww. He loved us all so much."
OR,
"Anyone happen to remember that oddball Sloww?
The old fart that left his money to the neighbor's cat?"
It could also be:
"This is your great grandfather Sloww. He never got his life on the right Tracks, impregnated his girlfriend with 15 had to leave school and therefore had no education and debts over debts. Be thankful that your grandfather left your great grandfathers home early and worked from morning till the evening to get a good education before he married your grandmother and produced your father"
vs.
"Do you remember Sloww?
He had no children, but all of the money he left went to an endowment to help starving children in the third world"

Even People without children can have legacies that outlive them.
Think of da Vinci, Mozart, even Hitler, they are famous even now, decades to hundreds of years after their death.
Not because of children but because of what they did in their lifes.
The OP makes no mention of some historical legacy on the part of either individual.

I don't believe I die and that's all. If I do, it changes nothing.

On the other hand you have some guy who never left his hometown, never got much education and thinks Iraq and Iran are the same country. House is mortgaged, he is scraping to make ends meet. Has 5 kids.
tell me where you see evidence that the man applied hiimself.

Kids aren't a measure of achievement any more than money is. However, in the scenario laid out, I don't see how you could say a stupid schlub with five kids is more successful than someone with a "fulfilled life".

however, growing up in a poor family MYSELF, i KNOW how hard it is to come up, to struggle to make that dollar. To make that NAME and be financially SECURE. not easy brother...
The OP makes no mention of some historical legacy on the part of either individual.
But a lot of money that can be used to help others.
(unless he ies really the oddball sloww mentioned in his example. But considering the fact that the OP mentions that Person A has lots of social contacts it might be very probable that he doesn´t turn into such an oddball)
