It looks immensly confusing buying a cell phone in the states. In Sweden every carrier uses GSM or 3G. No hassle

I read up a little more about the US situation and Asher's right that only some of the carriers here use GSM; others use another standard. Annoying...

I recommend you to look at review posted over the net(Cnet, amazon etc..) before making any move.

Just an update:

I went ahead and just switched my plan over from my AT&T Free3Go plan to a proper Cingular/The-New-AT&T-But-You-Still-Need-To-Switch-Plans-And-There-Is-Nothing-You-Can-Do-About-It-AHA-HA-HA-HA-ENJOY-BEING-NEEDLESSLY-INCONVENIENCED-FOR-NO-GOOD-REASON GoPhone plan, but instead of getting a new cellphone myself, I just got the phone that came with the Cingular/The-New-AT&T-But-You-Still-Need-To-Switch-Plans-And-There-Is-Nothing-You-Can-Do-About-It-AHA-HA-HA-HA-ENJOY-BEING-NEEDLESSLY-INCONVENIENCED-FOR-NO-GOOD-REASON GoPhone plan, a Motorola C139. I'll worry about getting a better phone later.
