I wonder why Americans think that A/C is a vital necessity for soldiers.
1) Tanks get very hot
2) The middle east gets very hot
3) Heat exhaustion is a real threat
4) Exhausted troops help no one

What evidence do you have that they never shopped around at all?
Why should they publicly discuss something that's still under negotiation?
Come on Asher, think before you post. Better yet, read the thread first.
As I mentioned before, when the government plans to buy military equipment, it traditionally announces its intention. That way, the sellers will know to contact the government. The more sellers there are, the more likely the price will be better.
In this case, the government has still not said whether it intends to buy the tanks. That's a problem.
We know that they have not shopped around because we have suppliers, Krauss-Maffei, saying they have not been contacted by the military, while another company said it had been given specs. See the problem.
We know that only the German government has publicly stated that it had been contacted, while other countries have said nothing. If they were trying to sell tanks, they would have let it be known.
The government has an obligation to tell Canadians how it is spending money. The public then has an option of saying great idea, or are you crazy. This is a basic function of a democratic society.
Military purchases are routinely discussed in public in Western countries. The exception to the rule is funding for top-secret inventions. Buying used tanks does not fall under this rule.

Yeah, I wish there were public discussions going on about buying these tanks. If only the public knew.
Oh, wait a second...

Did you read this thread. The purchase was leaked by the Germans, not the Canadian government.
We still do not know:
- How much the government plans to spend;
- Whether there really is a need for new tanks;
- Why the government wants the Leopard 2, as oppose to other options; and
- potential supplies have not been given details needed to bid for any contracts.
If the Liberals were doing this, you would be screaming bloody murder. But your kneejerk reaction is to defend Harper, even when you nothing about the issue.

WTF? I'm NOT a fan of Harper.
I am a fan of beefing up our military, and I'm not convinced every military purchase requires the rubber stamp of journalists who love their country so much they move as far away as possible.
The simple fact is no purchase has been made, and they're looking into options, and you're whining about giving our troops better tanks. Suck it up, princess.
And don't even think about thinking this is political on my part, I hate all of the parties equally in different ways.

Afghanistan, Iraq, same **** different name.
The point still stands.
Look at a map, buddy. Two different environments.
Iraq has average temperatures in the 40s for four months of the year. Kabul's average summer temperature in the low 30s in July and August. Kandahar is hotter, but averages in the high 30s

Please, don't try again.
Tingkai, Kandahar is nothing like Wainwright, Alberta. You're doing an awesome job of discrediting yourself in the name of party politics.

Funny how you love defending the Conservatives, until it comes time to vote.
Yeah?? This is the only time I've defended Harper's government as far as I know. Feel free to let me know when else I've done it.
Lord knows I've criticized them heavily on social issues.
You're a partisan hack, I'm not -- I want whats best for the country, you want to discredit the right. Whatever floats your boat, at least I live here.
The fact that you don't makes your opinion worthless to this discussion.

Originally posted by Lonestar Tingkai, those Russian airlifters are intended as an interim solution until the NATO-purchased C-17s come online. In fact, I saw an article about it(NATO purchased C-17s) just yesterday...
Read the SFU link I posted earlier. It mentions that NATO is considering a long-term lease, past 2012, on the airlifters.
As for your link, it says that two alliance members are considering a purchase of maybe four, but only if the Americans pay for one of the them and even then, they want to lease and only affective buy 2 c-17.
