I don't know that Asher is wealthy. I believe he's a recent grad so he's likely making between $55k-$65k; that's good for a single (I mean a man without a family to support) guy in his 20's but hardly enough to call wealthy. I'm sure the cost of living in Ontario is lower then some other places but it isn't that low.

It's like saying that I don't have an intrinsic problem with wealth transfer schemes like medicare, but do have a problem with the poor being given subsidised cigarettes.

The liberal arts should be funded though not to the degree that they are. We still need people for the soft sciences though they arguably hog more resources then they deserve. As for wealth transfer, some wealth transfer to help the less fortunate is good and benifets society as a whole though to much removes the incentive for people to work harder and learn/work the more difficult fields. I don't think anyone, other then perhaphs tobacco companies, thinks that giving the poor cigarettes is a good use of public money.

US$50k is good for someone ~25. It isn't big enough to call someone wealthy though. $50k in savings is good but it took me $70k just to put a minimal down on a house. I grant you Ontario's housing market isn't as absurdly priced as California's, and by any standard Asher is doing very well, though I wouldn't call him wealthy. Where I come from $50k is middle class and not even upper middle class. It's a good living but not even close to being wealthy.

Overall, the number of professors teaching liberal arts is reasonable. What you'd be arguing for is that there are too many students for the number of job opportunities involved, which is correct. In a public system, where much more funding comes from the State than the students themselves, I can understand the idea. But aren't American colleges mostly financed through fees and donations anyway?
