As far as I understand, this thread is devoted to historical figures who have personally sacrificed themselves for a cause. From what I have read, it is apparent that Smith's life was prematurely ended by his devotion to his cause/religion. This seems to fit the criteria of the thread; whether or not we each believe every cause mentioned to be right is not the discussion, nor should this be a punting ground for insults.

So onto the original intent of this thread, my picks are:

George Washington
Martin Luther King Jr.
William Tyndale
Joan of Arc
Nelson Mandela

What is your point, settler? By those criteria Hitler deserves mention here. But were you so dumb as to mention him I would feel it my duty to disparage your choice.

If we are discussing Judeo-Christian martyrs, (which is difficult due to the lack of specification in the terms of "the first martyr") then I do believe that John the Baptist predeceased Stephen, Paul, and Jesus himself.

John the Baptist is not considered a Christian martyr by most scholars. He understood that Jesus was the Messiah, but could not possibly have understood what form the salvation that Jesus brought would take.

In other words, he was not a Christian because he did not believe in several essential elements of mainstream Christianity. He could not believe in them because they had not occurred or been revealed yet.

St. Stephen is considered, by most mainstream Christian theologians, to be the first martyr of the Christian faith.

Since you obviously live by what wikipedia says I am sure you will have to agree. And yes, Hitler did die for his beliefs despite the fact that the majority of us disagree with them, so essentially he fits the criteria, but is not included in my picks.

I am merely trying to take this discussion back to its intellectual roots, which you so unceremoniously disrupted. So enough with all this flaming, I would like to hear who others would like to nominate.

It is the coward's way to avoid discussing the fact that the argument offered by said coward is so vague as to allow even the most repugnant examples to fit his criteria.

Ah, the "reductio ad wikipedia" argument. If somebody states a well-known historical fact and proceeds to cite wikipedia in order to provide those less informed than himself the ability to learn, then he is guilty of relying solely upon a flawed source and his facts must be disputed based entirely on the "wikipedia makes mistakes lol" meme.
